Pilgrims Guide
Jammu City is the railway and air terminus for the pilgrims. It has a number of sarais offering accommodation on first-come first-served basis. A very good modern sarai has been constructed in recent years in the famous Raghunath Temple precincts. It is, moreover, nearest to the bus stand.
In addition, the accommodation is available in the Tourist Reception Center and a number of good modern hotels at appropriate charges.
At Katra the accommodation is available in the Tourist Reception Center, Tourist Hostel and Dak Bungalow on charges. Dharmarth Trust Sarai, Sri Dhar Sabha Sarai and Mata Chinta Mani Sarai offer good free accommodation. Besides, many private houses also accommodate pilgrims at nominal rates. During heavy rush the Tourism Department also arranges period's tents on charges. Ponies, porters and dandis (palanquins) are available at fixed rates at Katra for the journey to the holy cave.
The State Government looks after transport requirements, besides medical, police, supplies, drinking water and electricity arrangements. Recently some difficult curves and risky points of the footpath have been eliminated and distance from Katra to the cave reduced by 2 Kms. Moreover, electricity, and piped water have been provided along the foot-ascent. Path has also been much developed and beautified by the Shrine Board. Telephone and wireless servcies have been arranged at Katra, Adhi Kanwari and the cave site. Katra also has banking, postal and telegraphic facilities. There is a modern coffee hut built by the Government besides many private tea stalls and eating establishments at Katra.
